What Does Chiropractic for Nerve Damage Involve? (Causes and Treatment)

The spinal cord is the main structure between your body and the brain.   It holds a bundle of nerves that send signals from the brain to all parts of the body.   Our spinal cord consists of 31 pairs of nerves, which is protected by a bony spinal column that exits through openings between the vertebrae.   Damage to a single nerve may cause dysfunctional pain of the entire nervous system.   Damage to a nerve group, such as ulnar nerve can also mean damage to other single nerves.   Single nerve damage may lead to wide array of body disorders and pain.
Causes:
  1. Autoimmune diseases: Guillain Barre Syndrome, multiple sclerosis, lupus, myasthenia, and inflammatory bowel diseases are the common autoimmune diseases that attack the peripheral nerves.
  2. Cancer:   Nerve pain and nerve damage in some instances are symptoms of cancerous masses.   Nutritional deficiencies can also result in certain types of cancers. However, treatments for cancer (i.e. chemotherapy and radiation) may cause nerve pain and nerve damage.
  3. Compression/ Trauma:  Caused by compression of nerves or results in trauma can result in nerve damage.
  4. Diabetes:   Studies say that 25% of people who have diabetes, suffer from nerve pain. A diabetic person has sensory nerves that often experience a burning sensation and numbness.
  5. Toxic substances and drug side effects:  Various toxins and substances that are entering our body unintentionally, may cause nerve damage and nerve pain.  Medication such as chemotherapy for cancer has the ability to cause intense nerve pain.   Ingestion of toxic substances like arsenic, lead, and mercury causes nerve damages.
  6. Motor Neuron Diseases: These are the nerves found in your spinal column and brain that sends signal to all parts of your body.  Motor neuron diseases include amyotrophic sclerosis, also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease, this progresses or worsens the nerve damage.
  7. Nutritional deficiencies: Vitamin B complex deficiencies, as well vitamins B6 and B12, can cause nerve pain and nerve damage, resulting in weakness and burning sensations.
  8. Infectious disease: Lyme disease, the herpes viruses, hepatitis C, and HIV can result to terrible nerve pain.
Treatment:
Chiropractors consult the causes of pain and medical history of the patient, and perform physical examinations.  These examinations involve using lab tests or diagnostic imaging to determine the appropriate treatment for your nerve pain.
The treatment process may involve one or more manual adjustments in which the chiropractor examines the joints, making the proper Chiropractic adjustment to enhance quality of nerves and improve bone alignment. Many chiropractors incorporate exercise, rehabilitation, and nutritional counseling into the treatment plan (depending on the cause of nerve damage). Chiropractic takes in control of the prevention and restoration of injuries.
